Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 12:09AM Press Release - Marc Laferriere & NDP MP John Rafferty to Visit Brant Riding For Full Slate of Events
Marc Laferriere | Comments Off NEW DEMOCRAT MP JOHN RAFFERTY VISITING BRANT RIDING
OTTAWA – New Democrat Member of Parliament John Rafferty (Thunder Bay-Rainy River) will be in Brant/Brantford on Friday, January 15th to meet area residents and address their concerns about the HST and other issues in support of local candidate Marc Laferriere. The two have worked together in the past as Laferriere was a volunteer on Mr. Rafferty’s successful campaign during the last election.
Canada’s New Democrats are the only federal party to oppose the HST which was promoted and funded by the Harper Conservative government in Ottawa, and which will be implemented by the McGuinty Liberal government in Ontario on July 1, 2010.
Marc Laferriere will join Mr. Rafferty for a full day and evening of visiting with community members in Brantford, Brant County and Six Nations. The two New Democrats will be on hand to meet area residents and answer their questions about the HST, the shortage of job creation during this recession, the prorogation of Parliament, and other issues of the day. All events hosted by the pair are open to the public and admission is free.
“We want to talk about the HST even if Mr. McColeman and the Conservatives want to prorogue Parliament and try to run away from the issues,” Rafferty said of his visit. “The people of Brant deserve accountability and honesty from their elected officials, and Marc Laferriere and the New Democrats are ready and willing to fill the void left by the federal Conservatives.”
“This Conservative government is trying to avoid issues and controversies like the implementation of the HST, the economy, pension reform, and the treatment of Afghan detainees,” said Rafferty.
“We’ve been hearing a growing concern in this riding about the implementation of the HST and the Prime Minister’s decision to prorogue Parliament. Both in person and on-line there has been a groundswell against these recent government measures. Mr. Harper has pushed both prorogation and the HST on Canadians. Unfortunately these decisions have been supported by our current MP, “ said Laferriere. “We are traveling through the riding to give those who are concerned a chance to discuss alternatives. We invite those who are concerned from all over the riding to come out, share their concerns and get more information.”
“These are leadership issues, and our representatives in Ottawa have a responsibility to lead, especially when it is difficult. Prorogation is no way to take the lead on the issues of the day,” said Laferriere.
